Selecting PVC Foam for Composite Applications

Selecting PVC Foam for Composite Applications

PVC foam balances low weight and stiffness in marine, wind and industrial sandwich structures when density, thickness, resin compatibility and format are selected correctly.

Short answer

PVC foam is a closed-cell core placed between two thin, strong skins to increase sandwich-panel inertia. There is no single “best density”; load, thickness, temperature and process must be considered together.

Why does it matter?

The wrong density or surface format can cause excess resin use, local crushing, weak bonding or an unnecessarily heavy laminate. As density and mechanical performance rise, cost and weight also change.

How are density and thickness selected?

Define compression and shear loads, panel span and allowable deflection first. Then validate sheet thickness and density on a sample panel.

  • Low/medium density for broad, lightly loaded areas
  • Higher density or local reinforcement at inserts and high point loads
  • Contour-cut or grid-scored formats for curved parts

Resin and process compatibility

Compatibility with epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester must be confirmed for the selected grade. Grooves and perforations accelerate infusion but also affect resin consumption.

Items to verify

  • Resin viscosity and gel time
  • Foam service temperature and HDT
  • Groove/perforation geometry
  • Edge sealing and insert details

Frequently asked questions

Does PVC foam absorb water?

Its closed-cell structure provides low water uptake, but cut edges, holes and damaged areas must be sealed correctly.

Is the highest density always better?

No. Unnecessary density adds weight and cost; select a grade sufficient for the target load.
