Nomex Aramid Honeycomb Core Selection Guide

Select Nomex/aramid honeycomb by cell size, density, thickness, compression and shear performance, and target application.

2023 onwards

Short answer: Which sectors use Nomex honeycomb?

Nomex/aramid honeycomb is considered for aerospace, defence, UAV, rail, radomes, interior panels and advanced industrial applications requiring high sandwich-panel stiffness at very low weight. 🛰️

Why does it matter?

Performance does not depend on the Nomex name alone. Cell size, density, thickness, ribbon direction, skins and bonding process all matter. Not every property increases proportionally with density.

Selection criteria

  • Cell size: affects skin support, contouring and adhesive use.
  • Density: balances compression and shear capacity against weight.
  • Thickness: affects panel bending stiffness and edge details.
  • Ribbon direction: L and W shear properties must be considered.
  • Process: film adhesive, prepreg or wet-lamination conditions must be verified.

When may honeycomb be unsuitable?

Foam core or specific inserts and potting may be better for continuous water exposure, poorly sealed open edges or high local crushing loads. Selection should cover manufacturing quality and edge closure.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nomex honeycomb be used in resin infusion?

The standard open-cell structure can draw resin. It should not be treated like foam core without a suitable film, closed surface, adhesive and process design.

What changes as cell size becomes smaller?

Skin support and contour capability may improve, while cost, density and adhesive consumption may change.
